Celebrate the unveiling of the new mural!

On Sunday, October 8 from 2 to 4 pm, join the City of Hillsboro and M&M Marketplace for a dedication of the mural at the Marketplace (346 SW Walnut St., Hillsboro, 97123). Enjoy live music, light refreshments provided by M&M vendors, and remarks by project partners.

Parking is available and everyone in the community is welcome to join. Remarks will begin at 2:30 pm.

M&M Marketplace is the latest Hillsboro cultural hub to receive a new community mural.

The City's Public Art Program and Cultural Arts District are investing in artist-designed murals that directly support artists and small businesses.

The M&M Marketplace mural will be the last of three large-scale murals planned for the Cultural Arts District — which spans downtown Hillsboro, 10th Ave/Calle Diez, and M&M Marketplace.

City Staff met with M&M Marketplace owners, vendors, and community members to collect ideas and feedback to guide the development, and design of the murals.

The community said the mural should:

  • Create a warm, welcoming, entry experience for the marketplace.
  • Be bright, colorful, and address a pedestrian audience.
  • Be bold enough to be visible to passing cars.
  • Serve to represent and celebrate the diversity of the cultures at M&M Marketplace including the people, food, dance, and music that can be experienced there.

The mural artwork selected should represent the vibrancy of this community hub.

New Mural Location

The mural will be located on the front façade of the marketplace, at the main entrance facing Walnut Street.

It will serve as a welcome point for visitors and display the vibrancy of the activities of M&M Marketplace.

Thank you for your feedback! Over 250 community members provided feedback in both English and Spanish about the two proposed design concepts.

A community-based committee including the owners and vendors of M&M Marketplace, community stakeholders, the local arts community, and the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council reviewed the feedback provided, and project logistics proposed by the two artists..

Li Tie was selected for the commission based on the overall concept of his design which celebrates the bright aspirations of the marketplace and its connection with community.

See Li Tie's design concept below:

Work on the mural will begin in mid-August and will wrap up at the beginning of September.

Community members are encouraged to stop by the Marketplace during their open hours Friday – Sunday to observe the painting process.
