Criteria for Street Naming

Street names must:

  • Engender a strong positive image

  • Be appropriate

  • Have historical, cultural, or social significance

  • Commemorate people, places, and events of continued importance to community

  • Honor and respect indigenous and other historically marginalized groups

  • Avoid commercialization

Volunteer Lane street sign Key considerations:

  • Always have a single logical spelling.
    Avoid unclear spellings such as:
    • Knight vs. Night
    • Tail vs. Tale
    • Alan vs. Allen

To learn more about logical spelling, read the WCCCA Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Ideally, the name will have a single logical pronunciation. Variable pronunciation is okay as long as all pronunciations point back towards the single logical spelling.

  • Avoid long or complex names. Complex names typically have more than three syllables and more than two words.

  • Names may be selected from any language provided the spelling is consistent and easy to understand in the Roman alphabet.

Why are we engaging the community?

In August 2021, Hillsboro City Council adopted a Citywide naming policy, acknowledging that assigning names is a powerful and recognizable identity that should reflect the community we serve. With the expansion of our City, including South Hillsboro, there is a growing need to have more unique, diverse, and representative street names.

We're including the Hillsboro School District in this process to ensure our new street names reflect robust representation of our City’s robust diversity.
